Job Description

Position : Specialist engineer, Marine Engineering

Organization
  • Function : Marine Engineering, SLS
  • Country : Norway
  • Location : Oslo / Sandefjord
  • Supervisors : Manager of marine engineering / Discipline managers / Principal engineer

Context (Examples: creation or restructuration of a department, process maturity, new position, current specific department stakes etc.)

  • The Specialist engineer has skills and experience to take a technical leading role in all technical issues related to own Specialist area in marine installation engineering.

Purpose (Sum up the position using one or two sentences)

  • The purpose of Specialist engineer is to secure the quality of the technical work in own specialist area delivered from marine engineering department to the projects.
  • The Specialist engineer(s) may also be the marine engineering departments technical Specialist that can take part and take the responsibility to solve short term and unplanned technical issues in the projects.
  • The Specialist engineer reports to the Discipline manager and in addition Marine leads for project relevant issues.
  • The Specialist engineer may also take the role as Marine Lead engineer

Areas of responsibility (Use active verbs to define areas of responsibility and especially the weight of each responsibility : "Manage", "Support", "Participate"; "Is responsible for", "Is in charge of", "Promote", "Contribute" etc.)

Participate in department/company work such as:
  • Take ownership to own specialist area and frequently update the Marine Department about changes/deviations.
  • Special challenges (relevant for the discipline) in projects which needs to be solved
  • R&D cases, investments projects, studies and development of new technologies.
  • To be the natural first choice for QC on all technical work delivered from the department.
  • Tender work
  • Participate in general project work when needed
  • Training and follow up of new employees

Job specific responsibilities such as (relevant to own discipline):
  • Be a specialist in relevant technical issues
  • If an issue occurs, in short time notice be available as a resource, take responsibility and help solving the technical issue.
  • Follow-up sub-contractors, key suppliers and frame agreements
  • Participate in design reviews and risk assessments (HAZID and HAZOP).
  • Perform DIC and IDC on project documents; alternatively find relevant personnel that can perform the verifications.
  • Offshore supervision when needed
  • Develop and implement the QHSE system with necessary document templates and checklists.

  • Act like a HSE role model for others.
  • Take personal responsibility for own HSE in all involved activities.
  • Have zero tolerance for poor HSE standards, and intervene to stop unsafe work.
  • Adhere to company policies and procedures.
  • Training of new personnel
  • Update own skills according to company requirements

Expected results (What is the expected contribution of the position? What are the main objectives and expected results linked to objectives?)

  • Deliver according to decided objectives in own department and/or common objectives in the company
  • Contribute to keeping the technology up to date with industry practice and rules
  • For a specific project, deliver scope of work within time, cost and technical requirements.
  • Ensure that the engineering work is carried out in accordance to contracts and to Nexans standard/experience.

Position sizing (A few key indicators of the position such as: Turnover, Budget, Sales volume, number of N-1 etc.)

  • Project period are 12-36 months.
  • Be able to have the marine lead engineer role in a project or participate in a team of engineers lead by the Marine Lead Engineer

Required skills and qualifications (Management and function competencies regarding available Nexans models, personal attributes, education, experience)

  • Engineer with relevant education, Master/Bachelor or equivalent or experience with similar positions
  • Typically 10-15 years relevant engineering experience
  • Good communication skills
  • Fluent in Norwegian and English, verbal and written
  • Be able to work in teams as well as independently
  • Fully self-going on tasks within own discipline
  • Strong system understanding within own product area and strong technical competence within discipline area
  • Advanced ability and willingness to train others on key tasks (tools, software) within discipline / technical discipline area
  • Able and willing to identify improvements and to lead improvement projects
  • Ability to adapt to change
  • Ability to work under pressure and on own initiative
  • Be able to find alternative solutions in the work
  • High sense of quality and on time performance
