About the role
Our Commercial Underwriter is responsible for evaluating, analysing, and approving insurance applications for SMEs. This role involves assessing the risk associated with underwriting policies, ensuring that they meet Superscript’s risk appetite, and maintaining profitability while delivering excellent customer service. Our underwriter will collaborate with brokers and other stakeholders to develop customised insurance solutions that meet the needs of SME clients.
What you'll get up to:
- Evaluate and analyse insurance applications from SMEs to determine the risk level and appropriate premium pricing. This includes reviewing financial statements, industry classifications, loss history, and other relevant data.
- Underwrite new and renewal SME commercial insurance policies in line with company guidelines, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and internal standards.
- Approve or decline insurance applications based on risk assessment, underwriting guidelines, and company policy. Make recommendations for special approvals or rejections as necessary.
- Communicate with our sales team to gather necessary information, clarify details, and explain underwriting decisions. Provide technical support and guidance as needed.
- Monitor and manage the performance of the SME insurance portfolio to ensure profitability and growth. Adjust underwriting strategies based on market trends, loss ratios, and emerging risks.
- Collaborate with the product team to create or modify insurance products tailored to the SME market. Provide insights and feedback based on underwriting experience and market needs.
- Work closely with other underwriters, claims adjusters, and the sales team to ensure a seamless underwriting process and to share knowledge and best practices.
About you:
- 3-5 years experience in commercial underwriting, preferably within the UK SME market. Experience with various lines of business, including commercial combined, property & liability.
- Strong analytical and numerical skills, with the ability to assess risk and make informed decisions. Proficiency in underwriting software and tools.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to explain complex underwriting decisions clearly and effectively to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- High level of accuracy and attention to detail, particularly in documentation and data analysis.
- Strong customer service orientation with a focus on meeting the needs of clients while balancing profitability.
- Possession of their Cert CII qualification.
