Conducting world-class biomedical research safely, sustainably and successfully in central London is a significant undertaking. The scale and complexity of the science requires a highly professional and effective Health and Safety team. This function supports cutting edge science by monitoring and advising on health, safety and regulatory compliance issues, specifically working with Crick members and other stakeholders.
It is essential that all members of the Health and Safety Advisory team have the competence and flexibility to support the entire team function. In order to achieve this, Safety Advisors will be expected to work as both generalist and specialist advisors. This role will have ownership and responsibility to act as the subject matter expert for biological safety across the institute.
Responsibilities of our Biological Safety Advisor:
- Acting as a point of contact with regards to Biological Safety, providing specialist advice across the Institute, particularly within the research groups and science support teams, on a wide range of health, safety and compliance topics.
- Deliver objectives set by the Lead Biological Safety Specialist as part of delivery of the H&S strategy.
- Develop and produce written biological safety documentation relating to: Standards, Procedures, Codes of Practice, Guidance, Arrangements and Training, ensuring that information is kept up to date and reflects changes in operational delivery and legislation.
- Review and approve risk assessments, including those on genetic modification and biological agents.
- Advise on storage, transport and disposal of biological agents, including GMOs.
- Attend and support Biological Agent and Genetic Modification Safety Committee meetings as required.
- Participate in Regulatory intervention visits and manage subsequent follow up actions.
- Liaise with Containment Level user groups and university partners for the management of activities carried out in laboratories designed to containment level 2, 3 and 4.
Skills and experience we are looking for in our Biological Safety Advisor:
- Minimum of a Biological science degree or other relevant subject or equivalent technical qualification
- Minimum Level 3 Health and Safety qualification, such as NEBOSH certificate or equivalent qualification.
- Completed Biosafety Practitioner Level 1.
- Relevant membership of IOSH with the desire to progress to Chartered Membership.
- Understanding of legislation that applies to biological safety and how these apply to the Crick.
- Proven experience in a similar Health and Safety role, ideally from within scientific research, universities, or similar environment, including delivering training and leading safety inspections and audits.
- Demonstrable knowledge of biological safety in a research laboratory environment.
- Knowledge of the specialist health and safety risks associated with research activities.
- Experience in laboratory hazards, associated controls and working practices including chemical, biological or radiation safety.
