About the Role We are seeking a Director of Digital Biomarker Development to provide leadership and strategic direction to our Data Science R&D team, a passionate group of biomedical engineers with deep experience in data science, signal processing, and machine learning who are responsible for developing digital biomarker algorithms based on physiological data collected by wearable sensors. In this role, you will both provide technical guidance for individual projects and establish priorities across the full portfolio of research and development activities. You will be accountable for ensuring that development and validation processes are scientifically rigorous, and that deliverables meet requirements for medical-grade products. This is a highly collaborative position involving routine engagement with senior management, and with technical leaders on Software Engineering, Regulatory, and Hardware teams. You will: Define short and long-term priorities for Data Science R&D efforts in collaboration with senior management Independently execute on company priorities for digital biomarker development through strategic decision-making and active management of projects across sub-teams Work cross-functionally with Clinical and Regulatory stakeholders to design bench and clinical validation studies Provide technical input and support for algorithm development activities Review and approve R&D milestone and final deliverables Lead feasibility assessments for potential external partnerships identified by the Business Development team Define and model best practices for the R&D team, addressing topics including good machine learning principles, management of tech debt, design controls, and structured code review Oversee publication plan and strategy for dissemination of scientific content in collaboration with Clinical Sciences Some important details: Please note that Empatica is an international environment with offices in Europe, the US, and Korea, and so we conduct all our work in English. This role will be based in our office in Milan, Italy, with flexible options for partial remote working. You are the ideal person for this job if you have: A PhD in bioengineering or computer science, with demonstrated experience in data science and signal processing A minimum of 5 years experience in R&D leadership and people management roles Fluency in multiple programming languages, including Matlab and Python Excellent written and oral communication skills in the English language Demonstrated history of ability to work cross-functionally with technical and non-technical teams Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to adapt to evolving priorities in a fast-paced start-up environment Resilience, a get-things-done attitude, and an innate desire to do great work Nice to have: Direct experience with wearable medical technology Training in physiological signals and/or sensors related to biomarkers used in Neurology, Cardiology, Sleep Medicine, Mental Health, or Oncology Experience in clinical trial design and statistical analysis techniques Knowledge of machine learning and deep neural network models in algorithm development We hope you're feeling excited about the job, and even if you don't feel that you meet every single requirement, we still encourage you to apply.
