Your team

We are recruiting for several Research Analyst positions for now and in near future. You will be part of one of the Directorates General Economics, International & European Relations, Macroprudential Policy and Financial Stability, Monetary Policy, or Research. These teams provide input into the economic, monetary and financial analyses that are the building blocks of the ECB’s policy decisions.

In your role as a Research Analyst, you will be in charge of maintaining and running economic databases, chart packs, tools and routines for, among other things, monitoring, analysing and forecasting economic and financial developments in the euro area, euro area countries, or in major advanced and emerging market economies outside the euro area. You will work closely with analysts and experts in the field in other departments’ data centres.

The ECB is an inclusive employer and we strive to reflect the diversity of the population we serve. We encourage you to apply irrespective of age, disability, ethnicity, gender, gender identity, race, religious beliefs, sexual orientation or other characteristics.

Your role

As a Research Analyst you will:

  • address data and information requests and develop thorough and consistent interpretations of data under the guidance and supervision of experts;

  • provide relevant input for analysis by collecting and managing data and information, as well as by exploring new data sources;

  • maintain database infrastructures and support the development of analytical tools;

  • provide econometric support for analyses conducted by other teams;

  • work with large datasets, possibly including unstructured data, using machine learning and deep learning techniques, to address policy questions;

  • assist and contribute to the ECB’s official publications and help prepare analytical presentations;

  • contribute to notes, briefings, memos, regular reports, and to analytical and research projects by, for example, preparing charts and tables.

For these roles we are seeking candidates who demonstrate potential for growth and we will support the selected candidates in developing the required skills.

These positions offer you excellent opportunities to join dynamic and experienced teams and to cooperate closely with analysts and experts across our institution. You will be part of a multicultural team that strives for continuous innovation to make a positive impact on the lives of European citizens.

Qualifications, experience and skills

Essential:

  • a bachelor’s degree or equivalent in economics, finance, econometrics, data science, mathematics, political science or another relevant field (see How you can join us for details on degree equivalences);

  • in addition to the above, a minimum of six months’ practical experience (including, for instance, experience gained from internships, work placements or traineeships) in the fields of economic analysis and policy in a central bank or a comparable international institution by the closing date for applications;

  • practical experience with programming languages such as MATLAB, Python, R or Stata;

  • sound knowledge of data management techniques;

  • an advanced (C1) command of English and an intermediate (B1) command of at least one other official language of the EU, according to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Desired:

  • a master’s degree in economics, finance, econometrics, data science, mathematics, political science or another relevant field;

  • an understanding of machine learning and/or deep learning techniques in the context of economic and financial analysis.

You engage collaboratively with others. You pursue team goals and learn willingly from other people’s diverse perspectives. You signal any need for change by explaining it and proposing alternative solutions. You analyse complex information effectively and can evaluate different views to arrive at solutions. You know and anticipate stakeholder needs.

You are motivated to contribute to the ECB’s mission, to serve the citizens of the EU as a member of a public institution and to work with colleagues from all over Europe.

You are aware of your strengths and areas for development and know what motivates you to perform at your highest level.

Working modalities

We would be happy to discuss a part-time arrangement for this role.
