Grayson Thermal Systems
Electrical Design Engineer
Job Location
Balsall Heath, United Kingdom
Job Description
Role Summary:
You will be part of the team working on product design and development, generating all the harness routings, schematics and drawings to support successful release into production. You will be required to work with the mechanical design engineers to ensure that harness routing is imbedded into our design process at an early stage, providing the technical and practical experience to transfer this from CAD to reality. You will apply your electrical knowledge to ensure that components are technically suitable for the application, your practical experience to ensure they provide a reliable solution and work with purchasing to ensure we have a cost-effective design.
All schematics and harness drawings will be required before the start of prototype build, matching the CAD routings to enable controlled build of the first off prototypes. During the build phase you will work closely with the technicians to communicate the design intent, resolve issues, capture improvements and take ownership of the final build quality relating to the installed harness and it’s routing. Post completion of the prototype and subsequent testing, working collaboratively with the manufacturing engineers, you will ensure all drawings are updated so that the design transfers to serial production without issues.
This role will be office and workshop based. You will need to be professional, technically competent and able to work in a multi-disciplined team. As part of the prototype build and development you will be expected to assist with the physical build as and when required.
Areas of Responsibility
Design & Development:
* Generating harness routings, schematics, harness drawings & assembly drawings using Solidworks and Zuken E3 to support successful release into production
* Supported by the senior electrical engineers, you will be required to take harness design from concept, through prototype build & on to serial production
* Working with the mechanical design engineers to ensure that harness routing, support and access is incorporated into the design at an early stage and achieves the requirements for manufacturing and service.
* As part of the new product introduction process and continuous improvement initiatives, you will work hands on with the technicians to ensure the designs are correctly implemented and act on feedback to ensure the successful launch into production and achieve the cost and output targets required.
Testing & Validation:
* Support prototype testing and design validation of new electrical systems to verify performance safety & compliance with standards
* Testing may include system and component testing at high voltages (800V+)
Documentation & Compliance:
* Prepare and support the creation of comprehensive design documentation, including diagrams, technical reports, and manuals.
* Ensure designs comply with industry standards, regulations, and internal policies, including safety and quality standards (e.g., UL, CE, IEEE).
Collaboration & Communication:
* Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams to ensure seamless integration of electrical components with other system parts.
* Interface with suppliers and contractors to specify and source materials and components.
Continuous improvements:
* Participate in design reviews and contribute to process improvements to enhance product quality, reduce costs, and increase efficiency.
* Stay updated on industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices to maintain cutting-edge design capabilities
Experience, Education & Training:
Experience:
* Minimum of 2-3 years in electrical design engineering, preferably in manufacturing, automotive or rail, etc.
* Good understanding of LV and HV electrical harness design
* Proficiency in 2D & 3D CAD software for electrical design
(e.g., Solidworks, AutoCAD, Zuken E3, Altium).
* ERP/MRP for BOM development and management
* Familiarity with industry standards and safety regulations (BSEN (phone number removed), R10, R100, ISO 11898)
* It would be advantageous to have experience within commercial, rail, marine or automotive sectors
Education:
* Minimum Requirement - HNC/HND in Electrical & Electronic engineering
Training:
* IMI high voltage training (Advantageous)
Competencies
Health & Safety:
* To work in a manner conducive to safety and with minimised risk to yourself and others
* To report any health and safety matters to your line manager, department representative or H&S Manager
Details of the job are as follows:
