About the job you’re considering
Key Responsibilities:
• PLC Programming and Development:
o Design and develop PLC programs using Siemens TIA Portal for control systems in defence-related projects.
o Implement logic controls, interlocks, safety functions, and communication protocols as required.
o Develop Human-Machine Interface (HMI) applications integrated with PLC systems.
• System Design and Integration:
o Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to define control system requirements and specifications.
o Develop and review technical documentation including functional specifications, design drawings, and test plans.
o Integrate PLC systems with other control systems, SCADA, and networked environments.
• Testing and Commissioning:
o Perform system testing, validation, and troubleshooting to ensure functionality meets the project’s requirements.
o Commission PLC systems onsite, ensuring seamless integration with mechanical and electrical systems.
o Conduct Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT).
• Compliance and Security:
o Ensure all work is carried out in compliance with relevant defence standards and cybersecurity protocols.
o Handle classified information with the utmost confidentiality and integrity.
o Participate in risk assessments, FMEAs, and safety analysis related to control systems.
Hybrid working: The places that you work from day to day will vary according to your role, your needs, and those of the business; it will be a blend of Company offices, client sites, and your home; noting that you will be unable to work at home 100% of the time.

Your role
We are seeking a skilled and experienced Siemens TIA Portal PLC Engineer to join our engineering team within the defence sector. The successful candidate will be responsible for the design, development and testing, of PLC-based control systems, primarily using Siemens TIA Portal, for mission-critical defence applications. This role demands a high level of technical expertise, attention to detail, and the ability to work within a secure environment on classified projects.
- Experience writing S7-PLC programs from scratch in TIA Portal- Experience of implementing inter-PLC communication using various protocols (eg. PUT/GET, BSEND/BRCV)
- Understanding of various communication protocols used within industrial automation (eg. Profinet, Profibus, OPC-UA, MQTT, Modbus TCP)
- (Ideally) Experience in producing Functional Design Specifications (FDS) from User Requirement Specification (URS).

Your skills and experience
Qualifications and Experience:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation, Control Systems, or a related field.
• Proven experience (5+ years) in PLC programming with Siemens TIA Portal in a defence or similarly regulated industry.
• Strong knowledge of Siemens S7-1200/1500 PLCs, HMI development, and SCADA systems.
• Experience with communication protocols such as Profibus, Profinet, Modbus, and Ethernet/IP.
• Solid understanding of electrical control systems, instrumentation, and automation principles.
• Familiarity with safety standards and risk assessments in the defence sector (e.g., IEC 61508, IEC 61131-3).
• Ability to obtain and maintain security clearance (e.g., UK SC or equivalent).
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent communication and teamwork abilities.
• High attention to detail and accuracy in design and documentation.
• Ability to work under pressure and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
• Commitment to continuous improvement and learning.
Desirable:
• Experience with other PLC platforms such as Rockwell, Mitsubishi, or Schneider Electric.
• Knowledge of cybersecurity practices relevant to control systems.
• Experience with virtual commissioning and simulation tools.
Your security clearance
To be successfully appointed to this role, it is a requirement to obtain Security Check (SC) clearance.
To obtain SC clearance, the successful applicant must have resided continuously within the United Kingdom for the last 5 years, along with other criteria and requirements.
