Our Commercial teams focus on the budget of our projects, ensuring they continue to be successful and provide value for money. Quantity surveyors are at the heart of London's growth, transforming our infrastructure. We need the next generation of quantity surveyors to develop solutions for London’s challenges, from mass urbanisation to diminishing resources. You'll work with internal and external stakeholders to ensure value for money is being achieved.

Sustainability is a focus in every stage of construction from looking at early feasibility designs ensuring the design is sustainable to ensuring the construction methods, techniques and the materials procured consider sustainability.
What will you be doing?
As a graduate, your 2-year development programme will be made up of up to 4 placement rotations. Our aim is to equip you with the range of skills and experience you need for your successful career.
We also understand that everyone’s career is different, so every graduate’s journey is unique. Here’s an idea of what yours could look like:
As a Quantity Surveyor, you will work within a project team to upgrade our infrastructure (dating back to 1863), whilst ensuring we deliver an efficient service. As we look to modernise our assets, you'll be involved in crucial projects that contribute to the running of TfL. The projects you work on would help extend our network, improve our station capacity, purchase new trains and buses to enhance customer experience, improve the reliability of our network via technology updates, reduce times between services and developing new entrances in stations to reduce congestion and support London’s population. There are numerous graduates who started their journey on this scheme, have gained their chartership into the RICS and are now valuable members of our senior leadership teams.
Placement 1 - Road Improvements - Surface Directorate - 6 months

The primary responsibilities in this placement would include:
- Reviewing a feasibility report on changing a section of London roads to a pedestrian route only.
- Developing a Cost Plan and Budget to determine the projects alignment with business priorities.
- Engaging with an expert engineer to check the influence of removing a road from the London network.
Placement 2 - Procurement Team – Commercial and Finance Directorate - 6 months

The primary responsibilities in this placement would include:
- Writing a procurement strategy for new signalling equipment on the Metropolitan Line.
- Undertaking early market engagement and understanding what technology improvements are available.
- Commencing procurement and advertising the works.
Placement 3 – Rolling Stock Replacement Programme – 6 months

The primary responsibilities in this placement would include:
- Reviewing and negotiating change via Contract Admin.
- Reviewing and approving monthly applications.
- Cost reporting and forecasting.
- Managing the costs of a project on site and see the project grow and progress.
Placement 4 - Track Maintenance – Operations Directorate - 6 months
The primary responsibilities in this placement would include:
- Reviewing train requirements after technical inspection.
- Placing an order to repair a part/section of track on our network.
- Paying a Contractor who has completed the works or repairs.
Where can this career take you?
During and after the graduate scheme we'll support you in gaining professional membership of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) through a variety of mediums, including: RICS accredited training courses, in-house development schemes, preparation for APC interviews and mentoring. You will also be invited to a monthly 'APC Forum' to share information and ideas.
What training and support will you get?
Our award-winning teams will support your ongoing development, through a wide range of on-the-job practical experience and placements. We'll support your professional development through a combination of training, mentoring, and structured networking opportunities with scheme alumni.
- Placement manager: Responsible for your day-to-day management and support with your development
- Scheme sponsor: A senior manager who acts as a technical and professional adviser and has line manager responsibility
- Mentor: A senior engineer independent of your line management, who provides objective and confidential support for your professional development towards being a Chartered Engineer with the IET
- Buddy: Usually, an apprentice or graduate who gives support to you and ensure that you feel welcomed in the organization.
- Development adviser: Supports your professional development through providing career coaching and career progression at TfL.

Location
Hybrid working within this role enables a balance of 50 per cent of time split between the office and home over a 4-week period. Hybrid working arrangements can evolve subject to business requirements.
