Job Description

Small Vessel Technical Superintendent (Ferries) - Permanent – Scotland - £ Excellent package

One of Scotland’s largest ship owners is recruiting for a Small Vessel Technical Superintendent to join their team.

Reporting to the Senior Technical Superintendent, and in conjunction with the corresponding Marine Superintendent(s), this role is responsible for the provision of compliant vessels for safe and efficient operations, and line management of the most senior engineer position on board vessels assigned for direct management.


The Technical Superintendent is responsible for the safe, efficient, and reliable operation, management, maintenance, and repair of the company’s Fleet vessels, ensuring optimal reliability and availability.

Other key responsibilities will include (but not exhaustive to);

  • Ensure vessel safety and technical reliability.
  • Maintain vessels per Class and Statutory requirements.
  • Manage budgets and forecast costs.
  • Ensure service availability and reliability.
  • Review and update vessel documentation.
  • Monitor inventories with Marine Superintendent.
  • Manage senior engineer on board.
  • Plan and oversee vessel overhauls.
  • Compile post-dry docking reports.
  • Investigate and correct technical incidents and defects.
  • Provide management cover for other vessels as needed.
  • Review and improve Company Management System.
  • Liaise on technical and operational matters.
  • Undertake other technical assignments.
  • Participate in Emergency Response teams.


The ideal candidate will have sailed as a Chief Engineer and have experience in a similar capacity ashore. Ro-Ro experience is not essential but considered advantageous.


The successful individual will have knowledge of vessel specifications and requirements, an understanding of marine regulations, classification rules, industry best practices, and quality standards and be able to demonstrate experience of specification writing and budget planning.
