Principal Engineer

Principal Engineer (Start-up / FinTech / Fincrime) Hyre AI is hiring for a principal software engineer to on behalf of an early-stage fintech combatting financial crime and helping to protect consumers from fraud. If you’re a software engineering leader excited by impactful work, solving tough problems, and wearing a few different hats along the way, then this role might just be for you The successful candidate will take a leading role in engineering; leading from the front technically, developing their product, and acting as the focal point for the engineering team. Ideally, as well as being a technical pro, the successful candidate will also have some experience of mentoring & coaching more junior developers, running code reviews, etc. The business is in a rapid growth phase, so we're looking for a scrappy principal engineer who can get things done, arrive each day with new ideas, and collaborate with an incredibly talented team to achieve our client's goal of being the Fintech to put an end to scams once and for all. Skills & Experience You'll Need: Experience: Ideally, you’ve earned your skills through 7 years of experience, working on strategic, hands-on projects and managing your workload independently. Programming Languages: You’re an experienced back-end developer, but have a wide breadth of understanding across the development lifecycle. We're using Java heavily right now, through would also value languages including Python, Kotlin, Go, and Scala. JVMs: You're a deep expert when it comes to Java development; you've had experience running JVMs in production, and are no stranger to optimising performance or memory management (Garbage Collectors). Infrastructure: You’ve worked with cloud tools such as Docker, Kubernetes, Terraform, and Helm, as well as cloud providers like AWS and GCP. (We're using AWS) Security: You’re familiar with best practices for safeguarding against vulnerabilities like injections, XSS, CSRF. You prioritise security from day one. Accessibility: You design with inclusivity in mind, and build systems that work for everyone, regardless of ability. Industry Knowledge: Fintech, financial crime, or banking is a strong plus, however we’re also keen on hearing from candidates who’ve worked on large-scale systems handling sensitive data. What You’ll Be Doing: Building scalable, robust, and well-tested backend services that integrate with customers’ systems to fight fraud effectively. Designing and implementing elegant, intuitive and scalable RESTful APIs. Taking part in shaping our client's technical and cultural foundations—whether it’s setting standards, choosing tools, reviewing code, or fostering collaboration. Championing security best practices and ensuring sensitive data is handled with care. Diving into any and all parts of the stack alongside the backend as needed, e.g. infrastructure, data, front-end. Setting up and maintaining automated testing and CI/CD pipelines to ensure high-quality, seamless deployments. Location & Salary: This role is based in Farringdon, London, 3-days per week on-site. Though this position is with an early-stage start-up, we are pleased to be able to offer a highly competitive salary range of £90,000 - £110,000 plus a very generous equity package. We are able to offer visa sponsorship for exceptional candidates.
