Permitting Manager – Renewable Energy IPP Sector

Job Description

The Permitting Manager will oversee and manage the entire permitting workstream for renewable energy projects in South Africa. This includes securing environmental authorizations, permits, licenses, and land use rights while ensuring compliance with internal ESG standards, local legislation, and lender requirements. Key Responsibilities: · Lead the permitting process from project inception through construction and operations. · Conduct risk assessments and due diligence during early project phases. · Manage biodiversity monitoring and landowner coordination. · Oversee external consultants and ensure reports meet legislative and protocol requirements. · Lead environmental authorization and associated permitting applications (e.g., water use licenses, rezoning). · Resolve appeals and manage legal challenges with external lawyers. · Engage with stakeholders (municipalities, conservation agencies, national officials). · Maintain permitting registers and update internal teams on legislative changes. · Manage bid preparation, transaction closing, and project tracking meetings. Qualifications: · Post-graduate degree in Environmental Sciences or related field (B.Sc. (Hons) or M.Sc. preferred). · Registration with SACNASP and/or EAPASA is an advantage. · 5 years of experience as an EAP consultant with project management experience. · Experience with the Risk Mitigation and BESS IPP Procurement Programmes. · Transaction closing experience. · Bilingual in Afrikaans and English.
