Backend Engineer

As a Backend Engineer, you'll play a crucial role in building and optimizing scalable, high-performance systems that support petabytes of data and billions of events per month. You will collaborate with talented professionals committed to delivering sustainable ad-funded journalism and driving a greener digital future. Key Responsibilities: Design, develop, and maintain scalable, high-performance backend services and APIs. Optimize and enhance distributed systems and microservices architectures. Implement and support data integration and processing pipelines for large-scale applications. Ensure the reliability, security, and efficiency of backend systems in cloud environments. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to align technical solutions with business objectives. Work within the GCP and AWS ecosystems, leveraging tools such as BigQuery, Airflow, and Kubernetes. Write clean, well-documented, and testable code following best practices. Stay ahead of industry trends and continuously improve system performance and scalability. Qualifications: Proven experience in backend development with cloud-based architectures (GCP, AWS). Strong knowledge of distributed systems, microservices, and API-driven architectures. Experience with data processing frameworks, including ETL/ELT pipelines and tools such as dbt, Airflow, or Spark. Proficiency in backend programming languages such as Python, Go, or Java. Familiarity with security and compliance best practices in cloud environments. Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to deliver innovative solutions to complex challenges. Excellent communication skills to work effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders. Experience in AdTech or large-scale data-driven systems is a plus.
